If you’re fearless, hardworking, engaging, and want to achieve, we invite you to apply for our 2023 Summer Internship Program (Internship Program). We are looking to build a multi-disciplinary team of candidates from science and engineering backgrounds with knowledge in hydrogeology, ecology, chemistry, economics, environmental data analytics/geographic information systems, and other relevant disciplines to support our 2023 Internship Project Assignment (Project Assignment).

Recent graduates and undergraduates in the summer immediately preceding expected graduation are eligible for the Internship Program. Up to eight candidates will be selected as interns to participate in the Project Assignment. A multi­disciplinary team will be selected with representation in each of the following disciplines/majors:

  • Engineering: Includes candidates for a degree in any engineering discipline, with preference for study in environmental, civil, chemical, or industrial/process engineering.
  • Environmental Sciences: Includes candidates for a degree in geology, biology, ecology, environmental chemistry, natural resources management, or other related environmental sciences.
  • Environmental Data Analytics: Includes candidates with focused study and practical experience in environmental data analytics/management, applied statistics (particularly in R), or spatial data analysis (e.g., geographic information systems [GIS]).

The Internship Program is a 10-week program from June 12 through August 18, 2023, involving predominantly remote work. Interns will be required to commit to a minimum of 40 hours of work per week throughout the Internship Program through independent and collaboration-based assignments. Interns will also be required to collaborate in-person for three, 1-week group sessions at a dedicated workspace in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In-person weeks will be the first, middle, and last week of the 10-week program. This is a paid internship opportunity and accommodations can be arranged for candidates not living in the immediate Philadelphia region.


The Project Assignment entails a 10-week multi-disciplinary research program that will build on an ongoing regional-scale assessment of a major urban waterway in the northeastern U.S. Land development and urban revitalization projects are placing greater focus on the opportunities for these areas to provide societal and ecological functions. The primary objective of the regional-scale waterway assessment is to define the potential sources and pathways of chemical and physical stressors to the urban waterway that may be impacting human health and ecological receptors. The work will define the state of knowledge regarding historical and current environmental conditions within the waterway and its surrounding watershed and, in the context of future urban planning/development, define future societal demands and opportunities to restore ecological functions. The findings of the assessment will be used to define the scope of anticipated investigations and potential management options to support future remediation and restoration of ecological and societal functions.

The project team will leverage historical data and reports prepared by industry and government agencies, current and historical infrastructure information, peer-reviewed literature studies, and high-resolution imagery to define the potential contributions to, and impacts on, a tidal river and estuarine system. Analytical chemistry data and spatial datasets will be compiled to support the assessment and will be integrated into a comprehensive geospatial database for the watershed to facilitate analyses at spatial scales ranging from individual sites to watershed-level assessments. As part of the analysis, preliminary conceptualizations of linkages between sites and impacts (contributions) will be developed and team members will have the opportunity to explore forensic and statistical analysis techniques to further evaluate linkages between sites and impacts.

A full Project Assignment description will be provided to interested candidates upon receipt of a complete application package. Interested applicants are required to submit the following to be considered for the 2023 Internship Program:

  1. A cover letter with an expression of interest and a statement of qualifications for consideration in the Internship Program.
  2. A current resume reflecting academic or work experience that is relevant to your performance in the Internship Program.
  3. A copy of your current transcript that reflects your completed coursework and performance to date in your program of study. Unofficial transcripts will be accepted.

Following a review of complete application packages, select candidates will be invited to interview for the program. Applicants failing to submit any of the required components of the application package will not be considered for an interview.

Complete application packages must be submitted by January 15, 2023. Interviews of select candidates will be conducted in late January and the selection of successful candidates is anticipated by late February 2023.
