United States Environmental Protection Agency Announces New Superfund Cleanup Initiative

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) announced the launch of the new “Superfund Solutions” initiative on June 3, 2026. This long-term strategy is designed to accelerate the cleanup and remediation of more than 1,340 contaminated sites on the Superfund National Priorities List across the United States.1 Goals are to shorten decision timelines and reduce unnecessary federal involvement.

Efforts will be prioritized in the following three areas:

  • Enhanced Project Management: Focuses on expediting the remedy selection at more than 500 Superfund sites through streamlined decision-making across every step of the process.
  • Earlier Deployment of Tools and Authorities: Allows USEPA to simultaneously evaluate all options for a site under Superfund, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act hazardous waste cleanup program, and the Brownfields program while standardizing approaches for cleanup.
  • Application of Science for Smarter Outcomes: Addresses contamination by modernizing the approach to evaluate health and environmental risks at sites.

Our team will continue to monitor these ongoing changes and provide relevant updates as they are available.
