EHS Support documented detailed calculations to evaluate our client’s net GHG emissions from a proposed biomass steam project in France. EHS Support evaluated the net GHG emissions (i.e., emissions and reductions), along with the net impact on the company’s science-based targets (SBTs) for Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions. The Science-Based Target Initiative (SBTi) requires separate accounting for biogenic (i.e., biomass-based) GHG emissions and removals from fossil-based emissions. Methods to calculate bioenergy-related emissions or removals vary widely. EHS Support used BioGrace II, an Excel-based tool recognized by SBTi for calculating GHG emissions from biomass. The analysis documented the net change in biogenic and fossil-based GHG emissions for the facility, including a 90 percent fossil-based GHG reduction, with negligible biogenic GHG emissions from the use of local biomass from a sustainably managed forest. The analysis allowed the company to proceed with confidence in the net impact of its SBTs.
